About Kackaamin

Kackaamin is one of three Indigenous Family Treatment programs in Canada. We are a not-for-profit agency located in Port Alberni, B.C., and have been operating for over 45 years.

Vision

Healthy families are the foundation of healthy communities. By sharing both our Indigenous and scholarly teachings, we work toward societal wellness by helping families move through their traumas, rebuild their family circle, and mobilize individual resiliency

Mission

Recognizing that healthy families are the foundation of healthy communities, Kackaamin Family Development Centre is dedicated to a holistic approach to family healing and growth with the understanding that trauma leads to addictions. We believe every individual has the power of healing within themselves. Traditional Aboriginal Teachings empower our families to develop healthy relationships as they continue on their healing journey.

Values (the backbone of all that we do):

Our team of professional staff are committed to:

  • Perpetuating a healthy sense of community
  • Providing a family-centered program grounded in the Virtues of Respect, Resiliency, Responsibility and Transformation
  • Practicing the best quality of services grounded in self-care
  • Cultural supports everyone that enters our doors

With the basis of Nuuchah-nulth values:

  • ʔiisaakst’ał –respect self and one another
  • Hupiicst’ał – help one another
  • Hahuupst’ał – teach one another
  • Yaʔakst’ał – love self and one another
  • Haałapi ḥaw̓ił – we are connected to Creator
  • Hišuk ʔiš c’awaak – we are all one and interconnected
  • "The ultimate law of our people is the absolute protection of our offspring, for this is the way we [as Nuu-chah-nulth] people will survive" (Alice Paul, Hesquiʔqsup)

We carry virtues of resiliency, responsibility and transformation

Funding

We are primarily funded by Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA), First Nations Health Authority (FNHA), Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD), and School District #70 (SD70).

We are seeking funding for other projects which will be posted on our site as they become available.
