About Us

(Kackaamin, meaning Butterfly or Transformation in the Nuu-chah-nulth, language is pronounced "cots common")

Our History

Kackaamin Family Development Centre is located in Port Alberni, BC on Vancouver Island. Our centre has been located in the beautiful Alberni Valley since 2009. Previously, our centre was known as Kakawis and we were located on Meares Island just off Tofino, BC. We were on the site of the old Christie Indian Residential School that closed in the early 1970s. At that time the Catholic Church, the Elders in the Nuu-chah-nulth communities, and some local business people gathered to decide what could be done with old site. The decision was made to start a Family Centre. In 1974 the first client families attended the centre. Kackaamin has evolved from a safe haven for troubled families into a therapeutic healing centre, changing the lives of many families who have been negatively impacted by colonialism and residential school experiences. Our new centre, located in Port Alberni, has seven duplexes and two stand alone furnished homes for client families to reside in while they attend our 42 day sessions. We are fully accredited through Accreditation Canada. Our Daycare and Toddler's Centre is fully licenced through Community Care Licensing and Island Health Authority. Our school (the Learning Centre) is K-12 and is based on learning through academics and trauma informed schools.
